Mrs. Termine has been raising Monarch caterpillars/butterflies for about 10 years. Her hobby started with one milkweed plant. Milkweed is the host plant for Monarch butterflies to lay eggs. The Monarch butterflies migrate back to northern USA from Mexico every Spring and and Mrs. Termine begins to find eggs and caterpillars on her milkweed plants. She protects them from predators and disease by raising them in containers and feeding them clean milkweed leaves. The caterpillars complete their metamorphosis and are released as butterflies. This season has been epic. Mrs. Termine has found over 200 caterpillars and has shared them with teachers and students. The transformation is fascinating and the students have learned about the Monarch life cycle, migration, and their dependence on milkweed plants for survival. The migration to Mexico has begun and she is already looking forward to their return in the Spring. If you plant milkweed they will come. [ for more]
